I'd heard about The Witch of Pungo as long as I've been living in Virginia Beach. Grace Sherwood is somewhat of a local legend. All anyone knew about were the lies and gossip that eventually had evolved into myths. Through the book, we could see that most people were acting according to their ignorance and superstition, while Grace was acting according to her intelligence and common sense. The fact is, she was born years ahead of her time, and it's about time people knew about her. She's an inspiration.
Belinda Nash is known around here for being the authority on Grace Sherwood, and for her campaign to bring Grace to the attention of Timothy Kaine, Governor of Virginia at the time (2006). Once he read the results of Belinda's year's of research into records, he officially exonerated Grace of her conviction of witchcraft after 300 years.
The book gives the reader a nice snapshot into the 1700s when Grace lived. Weaves Grace's story into the backdrop of history and culture of the times.
