Having trusted the wrong man, bluestocking Miss Amelia Burcott is forced to seek employment as a governess in order to support herself and hide from the polite world. Little does she suspect, when she joins the household of the Earl of Raftesbury, that her new employer has a secret as great as her own and has need of a special woman to help him conquer his past.
Hugo Marchbanks, son of the Earl of Raftesbury, had never expected to succeed to his father’s title with two hale and hearty brothers before him. Yet following the wars with the French, he returns to the family estate not only in that position, but guardian to seven children.
Somewhat nervous of feminine company, Hugo finds himself drawn to Amelia in a way unprecedented in his life before. She is quiet and restful, yet he detects a mischievous sense of humour. Then an excursion with the children reopens an old wound and he finds himself blurting out his secret…

Hugo Marchbanks, the Earl of Raftesbury the H, never dreamt he would inherit the title as he had two older brothers. We learn from the Prologue that he had an extremely difficult childhood and left home at the age of fourteen and took the King’s shilling, and has been a soldier ever since, working his way up the ranks to Captain. He is now guardian to five children, three nephews and two nieces, and has hired a governess to teach them all, including Alexander, who is fifteen. Amelia Burcott, the h, is a young woman, intelligent and with a good education, who manages the children with ease. When they first meet Hugo sees a demure young woman, but then detects a mischievous glint in her brown eyes, sorry, remarkable brown eyes. (I say he’s a goner). They take the children for an impromptu picnic on an island in a small lake on the property, and Edmund finds a buried chest. The chest goes back to the house with them and that night Hugo gets completely foxed. Amelia can’t sleep because of all the undercurrents and goes down to the library for a book, where she finds the Earl sprawled in his chair drunk, and it is while they are talking that he blurts out his secret.
The two are growing closer together, in fact, they have fallen in love, but Amelia still has her secret to tell. What difference will that make to Hugo’s feelings for her?
This is actually more of a short story, rather than a novella so there is no time for any character development, but the author manages to give us the personalities of Amelia and Hugo, not to mention little Edmund and …… As with all this author’s books I have read so far, she manages to include some beautiful descriptive prose into this story. A short, sweet, light, clean romance to while away an hour.

Treasure Beyond Words edition by Heather King Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Treasure Beyond Words is a clean Regency romance novella by Heather King. I loved this story!
Hugo Marchbanks, 32, is the third son of the Earl of Raftesbury. He had a very difficult childhood as a result of his lack of prowess in the schoolroom. With the requisite "heir and a spare," he never expected to be Earl. His older brothers died . . and left him with the earldom as well as guardianship of five nephews and nieces between the ages of five and fifteen! Due to Hugo's negative experiences in the schoolroom, he has hired a governess, even for the older boys.
Miss Amelia Burcott is kind, encouraging, and everything Hugo hoped for in a governess for his wards. Hugo invests himself in the children, and crosses paths with Amelia frequently.
What I liked
*I loved the hero and the heroine, which is of utmost importance in a romance. Their relationship developed very naturally, I felt.
*I was very surprised at one point in the story.
*The language seemed period, and it's obvious that the author has much Regency knowledge. I have great respect for Ms. Heather King after reading this story and am looking forward to trying more. Apparently, she read Georgette Heyer as a teen, which no doubt gave her an early start on Regency vocabulary.
*I have to say that this book seemed impressively clear of errors. A couple of exceptions are noted below.
What I didn't like
*I'm hard pressed to write anything here, so I will note what I believe to be errors below.
*I'm no expert, but I believe that "Marchbanks" is probably not a likely choice for the name of his estate.
*At one point, the story says Hugo inherited the guardianship of seven children. I'm still unclear whether this was a mistake by the author, or if it was never made clear where the other two children are. I was confused by the issue, and eventually decided to ignore it since no more children seemed forthcoming. (I read this as part of the Sweet Summer Kisses collection. Perhaps this issue has been fixed.)
I'd strongly recommend this book to fans of clean Regency and fans of Georgette Heyer or Barbara Metzger. I found the vocabulary to be occasionally challenging, which I find great fun. I happily put another of her stories on my to-read list!
In Heather King's 'Treasure Beyond Words,' a young Lord is forced back to his estate when his brothers are lost in the Napoleonic War. He hires a Governess to teach the children of his brothers' families. Unknown to him, the Governess, Amelia Burcott had been kicked out of her home by her father after she had been ruined by a man she had trusted. Lord Raftesbury finds that he has to confront his secret problem in order to be able to run his estate effectively. He needs the right woman. Amelia doesn't think she will ever be able to marry or be accepted by any man again, even though technically, she is not really ruined in the physical sense- only her reputation. Yet as she begins her assignment as Governess, she responds to all the childrens' needs as they are presented. During an outing with her charges, she begins to better understand the Lord of the manor. Lord Raftesbury begins to understand what he needs to overcome his secret problem.
Can these two damaged souls help each other...or will they make things worse for each other? Heather King writes elegantly. She carries her readers back in time - placing them alongside the characters with excellent descriptions of the places and events. Furthermore, as a reader, you feel you know the characters. When the story ends, you feel like you have just witnessed someone's personal history. This story is sure to entertain and is worth the investment of time!
This tale ended far too soon. Both characters are flawed but found each other among a bunch of children who really didn't belong either one of them. She being the governess knew he was not for her but he had other hopes and eventually convinced her that he truly loved her.
